This is a journey for the kind of traveller who likes to slow down, look beyond the headline sights and get closer to everyday life – following food into markets, restaurants, kitchens, villages and small towns, and taking the time to understand the places we visit rather than simply passing through.
We still see remarkable places. But the focus is different: less ticking things off, more being there.
Chengdu and beyond
From Chengdu, we head west and south into Sichuan’s tea country, river towns and bamboo-covered countryside, following the food and the landscape rather than a checklist of sights.
